Our Commitment
Onboard Technologies, Fuels, and Waste and Food Resource Management
Fleet and Technological Innovation
Costa continuously monitors the development of technologies applicable to the maritime sector and evaluates initiatives related to the technical characteristics of its fleet as part of its planning and development processes.
Costa assesses the use of various technologies and energy solutions for the maritime industry, including energy storage systems, ship performance management systems, and potential applications of alternative fuels.
Waste Management
Waste management on board is governed by the Garbage Management Plan, as required by Annex V of the MARPOL Convention, and implemented across the entire fleet. The plan provides for the separation of different categories of waste on board to enable differentiated disposal ashore and, where port infrastructure allows, recycling.
Less Plastic: Partnership with Fratelli Guzzini
Since May 2024, Costa has been collaborating with Fratelli Guzzini, an Italian design company. PET bottles collected from Costa ships in the port of Civitavecchia are sent through a recycling process to produce R-PET, a material used by Guzzini to manufacture the “Tierra” collection of drinking glasses used on board.
Food Management and Waste Prevention
Costa has developed initiatives to monitor food consumption and identify opportunities to prevent waste throughout the various stages of procurement, preparation, service, and consumption.
Across the fleet, these activities focus on food consumption awareness, waste management, and food surplus management.

Punto Viola
From 27th March 2026, with the activation of the Punto Viola, the Costa Crociere headquarters becomes part of a national network promoted by the association “DonnexStrada”, aimed at providing local communities with a reference point open 24/7, equipped with the awareness and tools necessary to welcome, listen to, and support individuals facing difficult situations, offering guidance and first assistance.
This initiative strengthens Costa Crociere’s role as a responsible organization, deeply attentive to the communities in which it operates, while promoting values of safety, inclusion, and tangible support.

Food Assistance
We support food assistance initiatives for people and families experiencing economic or social hardship. The Food Assistance project was launched in 2015 in collaboration with the Comunità di Sant’Egidio in Genoa to support activities aimed at improving access to meals and essential food support for people in vulnerable situations. Over time, the project has been extended to additional communities connected to Costa Crociere Foundation programmes and to emergency situations where partner organisations provide food assistance services.

Material Assistance
Through the Material Assistance project, goods and materials that are no longer needed on board Costa ships, but are still suitable for use, can be recovered and redistributed to organisations and communities that require them.
Furniture, equipment, medical devices and other reusable items are donated to partner organisations that employ these resources in social programmes and community support initiatives.
This activity extends the use of existing goods through recovery and redistribution programmes carried out together with local partner organisations.
Costa Crociere Foundation
Marine Biodiversity Education
Through the Guardians of the Sea programme, we engage children and young people in educational activities focused on the marine environment and marine biodiversity. Activities are carried out both on board Costa ships and in schools through workshops, educational games and hands-on experiences designed to help participants explore marine ecosystems and understand the role oceans play within natural environments.
The programme encourages active participation and offers opportunities to learn about biodiversity, marine habitats and environmental topics through age-appropriate educational experiences.
Costa Crociere Foundation
Volunteering
Costa Crociere Foundation promotes volunteering initiatives that involve people in activities supporting social and environmental projects developed with partner organizations. Through practical initiatives and awareness-raising campaigns, participants can contribute to activities that respond to community needs and support environmental sustainability.
